Downtown Southampton

Quick stop in Southampton

October 7, 2017

Had a few hours to kill before my flight back to Amsterdam so I decided to stop by downtown Southampton and explore the city.

RICHARD ANDREWS

October 7, 2017

The statue was designed by Philip Brannon and is the work of Benjamin Brain, a stonemason from Shirley. The foundation stone was laid on October 1st, 1860. Richard Andrews (1796-1859) was five times Mayor of Southampton, and the owner of a coach-building business in Above Bar Street. The statue is now much less grand. The pedestal was taken down in 1971, and the Bath Stone has weathered badly. The statue was restored in 2000 and mounted on a new plinth in Portland stone.
